The general task of the CPMR Fisheries Intercommission Group (FIG) is to assist the General Secretariat in preparing policy positions (resolutions, technical papers, reports, etc.) for approval by the CPMR’s executive bodies (General Assembly and/or Political Bureau) on all issues related to fisheries, aquaculture and the Common Fisheries Policy, in the peripheral maritime regions.
In this regard, the Fisheries Intercommission Group aims to:
- monitor the regulatory provisions on the Common Fisheries Policy, and draw up opinions on the draft regulations on the implementation of the future fisheries and aquaculture fund (establishing policy positions);
- encourage exchanges of information between the regions, professionals from the industry, representatives of the research sector, experts and political decision-makers by organising meetings and seminars and developing cooperation projects;
- support and coordinate initiatives and technical/political debates developed within the fisheries working groups of each of the CPMR’s Geographical Commission
The Fisheries Intercommission Group is led by Shetland Islands Council. Technical coordination is provided by the CPMR General Secretariat, which will be also in charge of sending policy positions drafted by the FIG to the relevant EU and Member State bodies.
Participation in the FIG is open to all politicians from CPMR Member Regions in charge of fisheries issues.
